AI in the Studio: A Practical Exploration of Music Creation Tools

Introduction

We are in Berlin, so I did feel like we had to make some sort of electronic dance music tonight. So, what are we feeling in the crowd? A little more on the housey EDM side, or are we really going pure techno here?

Okay, so ready? House EDM, raise your hand. An option for trance, trance. And techno. It looks like by a slim majority, Techno wins, so all right.

Now, the three tools I'm going to use to do this, pending again, hopefully, with live demos, you never know exactly what you're going to get, but I do have a backup, so if it doesn't work, you all get to see how I made a song about my cats at home. Very queer woman in Berlin, I know, but yeah. That was the best backup demo I could think of.

So, let's get started.

Setting the Stage for Techno Creation

I'm gonna use ChatGPT to generate the lyrics. Then we're gonna use Dali and ChatGPT to generate the album cover. And then we're gonna use Suno. I don't know if anyone has heard of Suno. to actually generate the music.

And the idea of this is just to show how easy it can be to get started and that you don't need to be a developer to do this. I'm not a developer. I am able to do this on stage in the next 10 minutes. So just get out there and play with tools because that's how you also can start to understand a bit better how this can go in your workflow. Though I have to admit, I don't often make techno songs in my workflow, but... That being said, let's get started.

Crafting the Lyrics

So first off, let's write the prompt for getting the lyrics.

I'm going to try to have as many hands as possible. Can everyone hear me if I just kind of speak loudly? Okay, great. That helps me out a lot.

Act as a professional techno artist You've been tasked to generate lyrics to commemorate an AI meetup happening in Berlin tonight.

Start by asking me specific questions you need to know in order to generate personalized lyrics for your song.

Now, one of the reasons why I'm asking it to ask questions is because if I would just say, generate a song about the meetup, it's going to be very generic and it's going to be random. It's going to look at all the data it has and just kind of pick what makes sense. So by having it ask some questions, we're able to give it inputs and prompts and kind of think through what might be fun to add to it.

1I think you can kind of see where the collaborative aspect is going to come in very soon now. All right, then after gathering this information, generate the lyrics for the song, ensuring that the song lyrics suit the techno music genre.

Let's see what it's gonna do. You'll also note I'm using the newest model, so there is 4, 3.5, and now 4.0. So let's see what questions it's going to ask us.

What is the name of the event? MindStone AI Meetup.

All right. Specific themes or topics that we felt were highlighted at the meetup. Shout some out.

Education. Education and AI. LLMs. Yeah.

Purpose. The importance of purpose. These were all important topics.

All right. Any notable speakers or guests? Do we want to highlight that?

Do we feel like we want to highlight another aspect, maybe the fact we're in WeWork? In Berlin.

The song will be available for promotional use afterwards. I do expect to see it in a WeWork commercial, of course, naturally. WeWork hosted the event in their awesome location with a very bright neon, is that a tiger? Yes. Tiger, okay. Tiger. In the background.

All right. Any specific feelings or messages that we want to convey that was a part of this meetup that we think is important? The future is bright with AI. The future is bright with AI was an important message.

Let's see. Do we want more upbeat and energetic or reflective and thoughtful? Upbeat and energetic. Energetic, okay, votes for energetics with hands. Okay, I won't even ask, sorry for the thoughtful votes, but we're gonna go here.

Upbeat and energetic would be great.

Let's see, any iconic Berlin references or elements that should be a part of the lyrics. Other things about Berlin? Good summers, bad winters. I think everyone would agree to that.

Maybe one last thing. Diversity in Berlin, yes. Do we want any historical or cultural references tied to Berlin? All right, breaking the wall is the cultural reference.

Anything we think is missing? Should we add a bear in? I mean, bear Berlin also seems like a common theme. Bears are great in Berlin.

It's gonna be a weird song, that's for sure. All right, going once, going twice, any last inputs? then let's see what it's going to do with this.

A techno anthem we're getting even. So as it's generating. In the heart of Berlin where the future's seen. Yeah, uplifting anthem we're going there.

Let's see other. LLM's in focus and we're taking flight. At WeWork, neon tiger glowing in the night.

The future is bright with AI. Oh, what a sight. Purpose drives us forward through the day and night. In this city of diversity, we ignite.

From Berghain Beats to Kraftwerk Sound, good summers, bad winters, all year round. That's a... Yeah, true, okay, very fair.

Breaking the wall, we rise and stand tall. Bears roam the street, Berlin's call. Okay, yeah, all right. I will be sure to share all of the lyrics as well as we move forward on this.

Choosing a Song Title

But I think what we need now is a song title. So, let's ask it. Can you please generate a title for your song?

Now, this isn't an ideal prompt. For the reason that will happen right now is it's only going to generate one idea. And the odds of it getting it right on the first try, as many of you who have used it know, is really, really slim.

So let's say, OK, that's kind of all right. But why don't you give me 10 other different options? And now comes the next voting part.

What is it going to? AI rhythms in Berlin, neon tigers, tech dreams, purposeful beats, future sounds of Mindstone, Berlin's AI pulse, breaking walls, building futures. That's a very optimistic one. Mindstone melodies, okay.

So some good, some bad. But now let's have it. Another thing that you can do with LLMs is, of course, you can also have it rate on certain aspects to help kind of guide you based on looking at a few different criteria what might be good. So let's say now go through all of these titles and score them in terms of relevance to the lyrics and the briefing from one

to 10 with one being low and 10 being high relevance and recommend the top three. Now, I say this with a caveat, having used it for frameworks for grading before. It's not always great with this because it tends to be very average. So many things will be sevens, many things will be nines, everything will be horrible.

It's really hard to get it to do this properly. 1We do work with this in our own platform as well in trying to understand sort of the quality and contents of different pieces of content. So you do have to always look at it with a grain of salt. But today, not much harm is going to come from this besides maybe missing out on a record deal.

But I think we can all live with that today. So, all right. Berlin's AI pulse, breaking walls, building futures, bright futures, bold beats. Let's do a little bit of a vote.

One, two, or three. Who would vote for one as a title? All right. Who would vote for number two?

All right. And number three? I believe with the ballpark count, I believe two is going to win.

Designing the Album Cover

So in our second to last stage, let's generate an album cover. Is there anything we want on the album cover specifically?

Neon Tiger? Okay. All right.

This is always the risky part because it doesn't always like to generate images the first time you ask it, but let's see. We can all watch that little loading icon there.

Look at that. I mean, that's an aggressive tiger, EDM, breaking walls, building futures.

Composing the Techno Track

All right, so now what we're gonna do in our last and final step is we're gonna go over to Suno and we're actually going to turn this into music. Now, what can be surprising about this next step, or at least I found it surprising when I saw this demoed for the first time, is once I hit Create, it can actually be faster than ChatGPT at generating things, even though it's now generating us two versions of a techno song with those lyrics that is entitled Breaking Walls, Building Futures. And then we're going to hear our handiwork, how it's going to turn out. It's anyone's guess.

So, first off, we're gonna select custom mode because we do actually have lyrics, we have a style, and we also have a title for the music. So, copy paste the lyrics that we have there. We don't need to check instrumental, we want the lyrics in it. Enter style of music, techno, and let's enter our title.

Again, I have already forgotten what title we chose. Whoops, let's not zoom in on that. We did breaking walls, building futures.

So. given it a second to finish it up. And of course, since I said it was much faster than chat GPT, definitely I screwed myself over there a little bit with that. But we will just wait very patiently for the loading.

And as you see, if it does not load, we have pause on the beats. I mean, that's going to be a real classic coming up for sure. Two cats, one big world. Let's see.

I'm just going to... Yeah, I really should have. And you can see what it does do. Unfortunately, right now, it does not let you swap out cover art for the songs you create, but it does try to generate its own cover art based on everything that has been going on.

See if I can trick it into being done. No, it's still thinking about it. Well, while that's loading, then I will kind of just go to wrapping it up as we wait.

Conclusion and Reflections

So yeah, thank you so much everybody for joining us today. We're so thrilled to have such a lovely turnout of people. We hope you really enjoyed all the talks.

Most speakers and sponsors are still here. I will also be here if you have any questions about what we do at MindStone.

To just give a small briefing on that is The reason, again, we do these events is we really do want to make AI education as accessible as possible because there are concerning growing gaps in terms of who's using AI and who's not using AI. And of course, there's a lot of cultural societal stereotypes and biases and issues that get in that way. but hopefully more and more by bringing people together, by showing that it is accessible and helping people understand why the world is just changing and we do need to try to understand this component of it.

We really hope through these free events that we are able to do that. Now, all talks, not just from today, but from every single meetup we ever do from everywhere around the world is available for free on the platform. You just have to go create a MindStone account. And I will put a QR code up after this where you can just scan, go to our website, see a little bit more about what we do.

But again, I would encourage join the community if you haven't already because there's really hundreds of pieces of content on there from talks from a lot of very interesting people on a lot of diverse topics. So without further ado, let's see what it did.

The hall of glory, where the future's seen. Once a man, you know, the place you came from. Your imagination, it has shaped me. I'm stuck right with you.

I'm all out, I'm focused, the TV's locked. I'll be with you all the time, I'm hoping in the night. The future is bright, I'll be by your side.

Alright, so that is version number one. And now, let's see what version number two did.

In the heart of the loo where the future's sealed Mindstorm AI meet up, the place to convene Education and AI shaping minds so bright LLMs in focus, we're taking flight And we were Neo-Tiger going in the night The future is bright with AI all assigned Purpose drives us forward through the day and night In this city of diversity

What I will do is I will send links to the songs around. I'm sure you all want to play it 24-7.
